At our acupuncture clinic, we believe in treating not only symptoms but also addressing the root causes of imbalance to promote long-term wellness. One of the most unique seasonal treatments rooted in TCM is San Fu Tian —a powerful preventive therapy applied during the hottest days of summer to strengthen the body’s defenses against chronic respiratory issues, cold-related ailments, and immune weakness.

What is San Fu Tian?
San Fu Tian refers to the three hottest and most yang days of the year, based on the Chinese lunar calendar. These days typically fall between mid-July and mid-August, when Yang Qi (heat and vitality) is at its peak in nature. According to TCM, this is the best time to expel cold from the body and nourish the Yang energy, particularly for those who experience cold-related symptoms in the winter, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, allergies, or arthritis.
The Principle Behind It
The core idea of San Fu Tian is to treat winter diseases in summer. During the summer, the body's meridians are more open, and the Yang energy is abundant, making it the optimal time to drive out latent Cold and Dampness that may cause recurrent issues during colder months.
How is San Fu Tian Applied?
The San Fu Tian protocol involves applying a medicated herbal patch (often containing warming herbs like mustard seed, ginger, asarum, cinnamon, or clove) to specific acupuncture points on the back, neck, or chest—often on points related to the Lung, Spleen, and Kidney meridians. This is sometimes combined with acupuncture or moxibustion to enhance its effects.
Each treatment lasts around 2–4 hours and is usually done three to four times across the San Fu dates. Patients may feel a warming or tingling sensation, which indicates the herbs are working to stimulate Qi and blood flow.
Benefits of San Fu Tian Therapy
Boosts immunity
Reduces frequency and severity of winter illnesses
Relieves chronic cough, sinusitis, and asthma
Alleviates joint pain and stiffness
Warms Yang-deficient bodies (cold hands/feet, fatigue, digestive weakness)
It is especially beneficial for:
Children prone to recurrent colds
Individuals with weak Lung Qi
Seniors with chronic respiratory or rheumatic conditions
Anyone seeking preventive wellness care
Who Should Avoid It?
San Fu Tian is generally safe but may not be suitable for everyone. Patients with skin sensitivities, fevers, acute infections, or pregnancy should consult with a qualified practitioner before receiving this therapy.
A Tradition Rooted in Prevention
San Fu Tian is more than just a seasonal therapy—it represents a core value of Chinese medicine: prevention is better than cure. By aligning with nature’s cycles and supporting the body's internal balance, we can promote health not just for today, but for the seasons ahead.
